4 - Week Guided Journey through the Chakras with Shannon Hancock
And Kerry Burgess

Join Shannon Hancock and Kerry Burgess at Birmingham Yoga for a 4-Week Guided Journey Through the Chakras incorporating live guitar music, sound bowls, essential oils and guided imagery/yoga nidra to explore a basic understanding of each chakra and the traditional associations the energy centers, as well as using the yoga postures and senses to better grasp the visceral and at times subtle origins of those associations. Join us for some or all of these classes to increase your awareness of how to use this information for your own personal healing or just to relax and soak up the restorative healing energy!

Week 1: Grounding and Creativity
The Root and Sacral Chakra teach us to find support and a strong foundation, heal our relationship to the earth and those around us and from that safe place, we can start to explore the creativity and receptivity of the higher chakras. This class will include an overview of the chakra system as a whole as well as a closer look at the first two energy centers.

Week 2: Centeredness and Open Hearts
The Solar Plexus and Heart Center are two of the most important chakras. From the core of our being we find our identity and from this center we are more able to reach out to others and open our heart. We will explore the idea that being vulnerable is easier when we are clear on who we are and when we are confident at fulfilling and defining our own needs.

Week 3: Self Expression and Vision
Building upon the first two weeks, we will look at how it is crucial to have a strong foundation of safety and centeredness in order to find our voice and be confident in sharing our higher vision with others and even ourselves through the Throat and Third Eye Chakras.

Week 4: Stillness and Unity
Utilizing restorative yoga and guided imagery as well as healing sounds we will take a look at the amazing benefits and also the challenges of stillness and bring together everything from the past weeks to create a unified understanding of how the chakras help us better relate to our bodies and our world with an emphasis on the Crown Chakra.

Please join us each Monday for yoga, guided imagery, live music and more as we explore the chakras!
Full series $80, drop-in available for $25 per class, space permitting

Based on the primary, intermediate, and advanced series as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga yoga links postures with the movement of breath bringing balance, strength, and flexibility to our physical, mental, and spiritual bodies. The postures are given a specific order allowing the student to create a strong asana foundation.

Shannon found her way to the yoga mat through a difficult health diagnosis during college, in the early 2000′s she became a committed yoga practitioner in 2010. After graduating with a B.A. in Political Science from Samford University and working in the non-profit field, she completed her 200-hour Yoga Alliance instructor certification in 2013 at Birmingham Yoga with Akasha Ellis, and then further certification in restorative yoga, therapeutic chair yoga and Reiki Level I & II. She has been fortunate to attend classes and workshops with Laura Tyree, Becca Impello, Kerry Meon, and Bliss Wood. She teaches a variety of styles of yoga for any age, shape or size of body! Whether you need one-on-one reiki or yoga therapy for a illness or injury or want a powerful workout in the Ashtanga or Vinyasa tradition, she can help you find the yoga for you.

Personally, she loves to practice kundalini and mysore. She is also an active member of the community. As a former board member of Sweet Om Alabama – a non-profit whose mission is to spread yoga to populations who would not normally have access otherwise – she is honored to be able to teach weekly at AIDS Alabama to teach yoga to those with HIV and recovering from addiction as well as having experience working with a range of chronic illnesses and disorders such as, fibromyalgia, depression, bipolar and eating disorders.

From personal experience she knows the transformative impact that yoga can have on your health and overall well-being. Her mission is to share with others the practical techniques she has learned that have helped her overcome the challenges she has faced. Shannon strives to make each class a fun, informative and a healing learning experience about life, yourself and the world around you. Much gratitude to her teachers and students for sharing this path with her, may yoga bring you much joy and many blessings!
